Newborn Necessities – Gear & Supplies For a Baby’s First Weeks

The task of shopping for your first baby can be exciting and overwhelming. It is hard to distinguish between the “wants” and the “needs” and extremely hard to stay focused on your first trip to Babies “R” Us.

Below you will find a list for baby gear, toys, feeding, & sleeping. I do not address what you will need for grooming, diapering or clothing; make sure you add these items to your list.

Newborn Necessities:

Infant Automobile Seat: you will need a rear covering infant seat. I am a huge fan of the Graco Snug Ride.

Diaper Bag: Invest in one that will last, is simple to clean, and simple to organize. Make it stylish, too. A Polka Dot Moon offers many hip choices.

Stroller: Some lifestyles call for a jogging stroller while many parents can get by with a simple umbrella stroller.

Carrier: You will have several options in this category and it is a very individualized choice.
Most of my friends swear by the baby Bjorn front carrier, but many love using a sling, especially one with a fun pattern like the ones from Serena & Lily.

Personally, I preferred the stroller and the infant carrier inserted in a stroller. As my babies got older, I found I had a lot of use for a frame backpack, but this should really not be on your “need’ list as you will not use it right away. If this is your fist baby I recommend inactivity until after the baby is born, take baby with you and try on several carries to find what you are comfortable using.

Toys: For the first weeks your baby will enjoy your grappling the most, but eventually your baby will like some variety. A rattle with bright colors, black white patterned books and anything with a variety of texture are all good choices.

Activity: A bouncy seat or swing will be the prefect solution to giving your baby a new view of the world.

Fisher price makes a handy portable swing that works great for home and travel.

Bottle Feeding: You will need to begin with 4 ounce bottles and change to the 8 ounce as your baby grows. You might want to invest in a variety of nipples until you find what your baby prefers. If your baby is formula fed it is helpful to have enough to get your through the first week home. Your physician can advise you on how much this might be or you can use this guide: Multiple the baby’s weight by 2.5 ounces of formula.

Breast Feeding: Nursing bras- 3 to 4, nursing pads, nipple cream and a breast pump. There are several options available: manual, personal, electric and hospital grade. Usually the biggest bourgeois when making this buy is budget.

Burp Cloths & Bibs: Purchase several of these and keep them close by: In the car, the diaper bag, stroller, nursery and kitchen.

Sleeping: Many parents are very hot to get the crib set up before the baby comes home from the hospital, but the truth is, most babies don’t sleep in one for a few weeks. If you are going to begin the baby in your room, a bassinet, Moses basket or co-sleeper will keep the baby close and safe. A moses basket is a great option if the baby will be sleeping in different rooms. It is simple to transport. As a country precaution you should not transport the Moses basket with the baby inside.

Other Sleeping items include:

Crib & Mattress: Select a mattress that is not too soft, a firm mattress helps prevent SIDS.

Fitted Crib Sheets: Have at least 3 on hand to make middle of the night changes much quicker and easier.

Waterproof liners: These help protect the mattress from accidents.

Swaddling Blankets: A blanket specifically designed for swaddling works much superior than a receiving blanket. A well swaddled baby often equals a comfortably sleeping baby. Purchase 2 to make laundry time easier.

Monitor: For many parents this item falls into the “want” category while others can't live without it. If your home is not too massive and you feel confident that you will easily hear your baby then you will probably not need a monitor. If the monitor will give you peace of mind, then it might be worth the cost.

it means the first day of your period. Days of your cycle is from the first day of your period until the day before the first day of your next period. Your luteal phase is the length of time from ovulation to the first day of your period.

My Three Week Old Baby Is Constipated

Babies who are on breastfeeding usually have bowel movements after 2-3 days but, the same is not the situation with babies who are on formula feeding, as they pass the stools once in a day.

There can be many reasons for constipation such as heat, restlessness, improper sleep and so on.

When my 3 week old baby is constipated, it is a major concern for me to know how to make my child overcome this problem.

When my baby starts crying continuously due to constipation problem, I get worried a lot and begin feeding her, but she does not respond. It is only then I realize that my 3 week old baby is constipated.

There are a few exercises that I try on my baby when she is constipated, such as bicycling her legs, rubbing her abdomen softly, etc.

If the constipation becomes severe, I call up my babys pediatrician to know if I can make my baby drink a few drops of water. And on physicians advice, I again go for certain exercises and try out different remedies.

But if this does not work out due to severity, then I take an appointment with the pediatrician to get the problem resolved soon so as to make my 3 week old baby free from constipation.

My 3 week old baby is constipated due to irregular bowels which normally continue for more than a week, and so it takes some more time for recovery.

One should always try to maintain a note about when her baby passes on the stools, as this would help one to take the necessary precautions before it gets late and painful for both the baby and the mother.

Can a 24 week baby be kept inside the womb with leaking water?

Question by saint M:
Can a baby 24 weeks are being held in the womb with leaking water?

If the fluid starts leaking out from around the baby at 24 weeks, can they still prolong the baby comming out providing there is no infection started? At this point, I would think each day the baby could be kept inside mommy gives it a superior chance of being normal? Please…your ideas on this.

Best answer:

Answer by LouBelle
Yes it can, however, you would probably be kept in hospital where they could make sure that you did not get any infections. Your body will keep making the amniotic fluid so your baby will not have too tiny if it is just a small leak.

This happened to a friend of mine and they managed to hold off have until 32 weeks when the baby was born with no major problems,

any body with this style bed? what size should a mattress be it didn’t state when we place the mattress together. thanks in advance too all

Best answer:

Answer by ARMY*WIFE[baby boy on the way]
a regular crib matress. you keep that until they go to the adult bed and then it uses a full size.

oh and the man at the furniture store i got it from stated that the matress should be firm on the corners and sides so that the baby cant roll up against them and smoosh it down, i got just an off brand matress that he reccomended, i dont know what exactly it was called but it was firm on the edges and a more soft in the middle. he also stated that there is no need for all of those memory foam matresses because babies need support and ,again, the corners smoosh

there really is NO point in getting a fancy crib matress. they only use it until they are out of the toddler bed, and its not like they really care if it is some fancy virbrating soothing memory foam serta matress, yanno? lol

Space Saving Cribs

When you think about how little your new baby is when you first bring the child home, the space that a cot takes up would seem rather extraneous. Apart from taking up a lot of space, of prime concern if your living space is rather compact, your little infant will look totally lost in the enormous cot-size. Far better, in fact, for you to wage one of the many space saving cribs that are now acquirable on the market and move until your baby is a bit larger before having to find additional space for a full-size cot. Baby cradles tend to be referred to by a variety of names, usually generic terminology. So, whether you call it a crib, carrycot, Moses basket or cradle, they mostly full fill a similar function – that of providing a snug sleeping place for the smaller baby.

There are, however, some distinct differences between a bassinet, for instance, and a cradle: a bassinet is usually static and set on a frame whilst a cradle can also be rocked – albeit, cradles are also generally stood on a frame themselves. Many cradles can double up as bassinets as well, having a peg at apiece end of the cradle that can be inserted into the frame to prevent the cradle from rocking back and forth, or reinserted if the rocking function is required. Moses baskets usually come with handles attached to them to make it easier to transport when you want to move the baby around with you from room to room. They are also easier to take with you when travelling away from home.

When buying your first Moses basket you need to check that the handles are sturdy enough to hold the weight of the baby and all the bedding and that the handles are long enough to meet in the middle to make it easier to lift the crib. If you are purchasing a Moses basket you will probably find they are prefabricated from palm fronds or the more substantial ones are prefabricated from wicker. Cribs are manufactured in a range of designs but, overall, they are similar to a traditional cot with a drop side or with a mechanism to adjust the height of the mattress. Traditional cribs are generally quite economical to purchase even though different qualities offer various price options. If the crib belongs to one of the ‘designer label’ goods then the sky’s the limit!

More recently the round crib has increased in popularity. It’s price attach is much higher than that of the traditional crib but, if you can afford to pay the price, these round cribs do take up less space than the traditional crib does. Then we have the innovative designs that are based on story-book illustrations – the princess design, or tale theme, with a canopy over the crib to full fill the image. These cribs can be quite expensive, with many falling into the designer adjudge category. I think, if we are speaking ‘space saving cribs’, for my money I would think about one of the converter cribs which begin off as a crib, convert to a toddler bed and, finally to a child’s day bed. This option is not cheap, but if you think about buying apiece item individually, you will probably find that they compare quite favorably. For a new baby I would purchase a bassinet or Moses basket because of the initial space saving options initially.
