Q&A: My 6 week old breast fed baby wakes every 2-3 hours during the night is this ‘normal’ still?

Question by Jas:
My 6 week old breastfed baby wakes each 2-3 hours during the night, this is ‘normal’ yet?

My 6 week old baby is breast fed and is waking up each 2-3 hours during the night. I am not sure if now being 6 weeks old this should time gap should increase?
I hear from friends that their babies started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks old (but they were bottle fed) does this make a difference??
I would love to hear other peoples experiences, the positive to this is I get to see my beautiful baby during the night :)

Best answer:

Answer by Lola
Yes it is normal! Just because a baby is capable of sleeping for 5-6 hours doesn’t mean they will or that they even should! The truth is that most babies do not sleep through the night, yet it is a myth that is perpetuated from generation to generation. Babies have needs at night just as they do during the day; from hunger, loneliness, and fear, to feeling too cold or too hot. They need the reassurance of a loving parent to feel secure during the night. Many babies do go through a phase where they sleep for longer periods of time only to start waking at night during different developmental stages. They might wake occasionally during nightmares, teething, illness, growth spurts, or during times of transition in their lives. Babies are very sensitive to their parents’ stress, which can affect their sleep patterns.

Parents can help their kids learn that bedtime or naptime is a peaceful time; a time of quiet connection and snuggles. Even though young kids might outgrow needing to take during the night, they might still require comfort and reassurance. It is healthy and natural to comfort your child at night, and will not lead to problems sleeping later on…. In fact quite the opposite, the more responsive the parents are the superior sleep habits your child develops…. for life!

Best answer:

Answer by Diane B
Talk to your pediatrician. She might initially be in a higer percentile, but then begin to slow down when she becomes toddler age. I had one who was always in the higher percentiles (actually off the chart) he is now 6’4″ and weighs about 200. On the other hand I had another one who was in the higher percentiles and is only 5’6″ and is slender. My youngest was in the medium higher percentile (about 75-80%) and she is the one with weight problems, so apiece child is different.
