Career Changes for Baby Boomers: Ability, not Age, Matters

Baby boomers. They’re the generation born between 1946 and 1964. They came of age in the primeval 70s and primeval 80s. They’re the generation that prefabricated changes and waves, worked harder and longer, place off marriage and children, did things differently than previous generations.

Whether because of financial necessity or because they have something to offer, baby boomers are staying in the workforce longer. The U.S. Agency of Labor Statistics data and projections indicate that by 2010 there should be 18.5 million boomers ages 45 to 49 in the fag force, as compared to 14.7 in 1995, and 16.8 million versus 10.6 million in the 50- to 54-years-old range.

They’re still making changes. They’re retiring later, or not at all. If not downsized or ordered off, boomers often continue to work. When they don’t select to continue in the same career, it doesn’t mean they’re ready to stop contributing, and sometimes they’re making transitions to new careers.

“On average there are three to five career changes in a person’s lifetime and that’s pretty common,” states Kevin Gaw, Director of Career Development, University of Nevada, Reno. “It’s pretty common that a layoff ends up being a great opportunity for someone to find something that’s more suited to them, too.”

But it can be challenging to a baby boomer to be suddenly confronted with a career change. They were raised in a world where you got your education, then got your job, and while you might not have stayed with the job until you retired, you would probably stay in the same profession. “It can be rough to realize you have to transfer your skill set to another area,” states Gaw.

In 2004, Gaw’s office worked with 208 alumni. Almost 7.5 percent were going through a career change, three percent because of a forced situation such as layoff or company closure or relocation. The rest of them just wanted to do something different. When you’re visaged with an important career shift, there are things you can to do make it easier on yourself and achieve a more enjoyable, productive career change.

Look at your skills. Determine which are transferable to other jobs.

Find your passion. What do you love to do? “It’s not about the money,” Gaw says. “The money isn’t what makes us happy. What makes us happy is doing something that’s meaningful to us.”

Look at reality. If you want to be an astronaut but can’t do math, Gaw says, the reality is it’s unlikely. People need to work through that disappointment and maybe change that passion to a hobby rather than a vocation.

Determine whether you want to make a immoderate career change? say from legal secretary to Web designer? or stay within the same profession.

If you like the company you’re with but feel the need for change, see if they can retain and retrain you. If it comes down to a complete career change, there are also some things you can do to help create a whole new career for yourself.

Promote yourself rather than your age. Once you get into a position and can show off your skills, you’ll be known for those skills rather than your years. • Begin slow. Before investing heavily in education, determine if it’s the right career path for you.

Network. Many non-entry level positions are found by references. Join professional organizations in the field you want to enter.

Think about working for yourself. A job market survey conducted in 2005 by global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., quoted on thematuremarket.com, indicated that of 3000 job seekers, 13 percent selected to work for themselves, and 86.6 percent of them were over 40. From Small Business Administration chapters based on most university campuses to SCORE? Service Corps of Retired Engineers? there are programs that can help you begin up.

Another option is to leverage your experience and instruct or train. Moving into training? coaching people just entering the profession you’re leaving? is a evenhandedly informal move. Teaching requires say licensing, and there are programs helping place retiring workers into teaching positions. The University of Nevada Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning takes executives through a first-time licensing program and puts them in the schools in just a couple semesters, often teaching in high-needs areas like math, science and languages.

Likewise, IBM unveiled their Transition to Teaching program in September, reimbursing them for tuition and providing stipends while they student teach. Many of their executives are highly trained in math and personal sciences.

Whether making a career change to a new profession or a new position, Gaw states such changes are a normal life pattern. “It’s a good thing to be open to change. The challenge is recognizing skill sets and knowing how to capitalize on them and present them to the new opportunities.”

Lyrics That Psyche Up Sports Fans

Music, like Jello, goes with just about anything — and that includes sports.  The music and song lyrics played at sporting events pump fans up, make them feel like participants instead of onlookers, and fill in gaps in the action (a red-flag caution at a NASCAR race can be more brutal than a Medieval torture device, unless some rockin’ tunes and lyrics are blasting over the PA).  So let’s take a few moments to give thanks for the music and lyrics that keep us sports fans pumped up.

“Rock and Roll Part 2″ – Gary Glitter

This song has no lyrics other than its shouted “HEY!”  But that one word, and the taut, military rhythm of its music, has prefabricated it a classic rallying battlecry at sporting events.  The absence of other lyrics makes this tune perfect in its capability to strongly affect sports fans on a raw, primal level.  Great sports anthem or not, when Glitter was arrested on kiddie porn charges in 1997, many stadiums ditched this song from their playlist.

“We Will Rock You” – Queen

Sports fans make entire stadiums vibrate when stomping their feet and clapping their hands along with this tune’s primitive drumbeat.  And at a sporting event, the lyrics in the song’s chorus, “We Will, We Will Rock You,” translate to “We Will, We Will Kick Your Ass!”  Queen’s guitarist, Brian May, who composed the song’s music and lyrics, was inspired to create a song that encouraged audience participation.  It segues into the music and lyrics of “We Are the Champions,” another favourite sporting-event song.

“Welcome to the Jungle” – Guns ‘N’ Roses

A powerful, aggressive song, “Welcome to the Jungle” is cranked up at sporting events when the home team wants to intimidate the out-of-towners, and fire up the crowd.  Football’s Cincinnati Bengals are known as the first team to use this song and its take-no-prisoners lyrics to unnerve their opponents.  And when Axl Rose screams out the threat, “Welcome to the jungle, baby!  You gonna die!”, those aren’t just lyrics he prefabricated up out of sheer bravado.  Rose had supposedly been hitchhiking, and decided to sleep at a New York City playground, when a voice in the darkness stated those same words to him, and sent him running for his life.

“The Final Countdown” – Europe

This tune’s signature keyboard riff and lyrics, “It’s the final countdown,” have been used to communicate impending doom to opponents in sports ranging from Formula 1 racing to boxing to professional wrestling to basketball.  Europe’s singer, Joey Tempest, never imagined part of the long, symphonic rock piece would become an international sports anthem.  Actually, it’s ideal that the rest of the song’s lyrics aren’t used at sporting events.  It’s doubtful that anyone would be intimidated or psyched up by spacey lyrics like, “We’re heading for Venus/And still we stand tall/’Cause maybe they’ve seen us/And welcome us all.”

“Start Me Up” – The Rolling Stones

Only a cat probably has more lives than this song and its lyrics have had.  It’s a broadcasting favorite, it was used by Microsoft for the 95 Windows campaign, it was featured in a Ford commercial, it’s played by the Blue Angels before each air show, and it’s endured as a call-to-arms during countless sporting events.  The Stones even played it live during the 2006 Superbowl XL, rephrasing its sexual lyrics.  And since it IS about sex, I guess that would make it a true song about sports–of the indoor variety.

What Kind Of Decoration Is Most Suitable For Newborn Baby?

This is one of the hot topics concerned by parents - how to decorate the baby room for your newborn baby?  We comprehend that you are eager to move for the arrival of their new life.  You are willing to do his ideal to welcome their newborn baby,  What will be more constructive than preparing a superb comfortable bedroom to welcome this tiny life?

Baby bedroom is the place where he is going to sleep for more than 20 hours a day, so we are going to discuss the tips about how to decorate your baby’s room to the ideal comforts for the baby.

Color of Bedroom

For the color of baby’s bedroom, soft and moderate tone color are always the ideal choices, like beige, light blue and light pink colors are the most favourite color themes for newborn baby.  Never decorate the baby’s room with too impressive colors, for the first reason, because baby’s visual nerve is still in the preliminary development period, it is suitable to refrain any unnecessary stimulation.  For the second reason, if the baby’s room color is too catchy and impressive, your baby will be so signal and focused on the surroundings and then refuse to start asleep. Therefore, light blue and light pink are the soft colors recommended for baby.

Air Ventilation

Baby is so sensitive to his surroundings, therefore, pay high attention to air ventilation and wind flow.  It is invisible but has great influence to baby’s health.  Make sure baby’s room is with nice temperature and fresh air ventilation.  Never place the baby playpen near the window, lest any direct strong wind will make the baby unwell and feel sick.  Also never place the baby playpen directly under the air-conditioner.

Lighting

The lighting of baby’s bedroom should be soft and comfortable.  It is superior to keep an adjustable lighting system, so that a clear but soft lighting will be applied in the daytime, this will keep the baby in good mood for play and fun activity.  While in the night time, keep the lighting soft and make a weaker light, so that the baby will know it is the relaxing time.  Remember when you are telling bedtime story to your baby, keep the light nice and dim, so that your baby will have higher sense of security and belonging.

Baby Playpen & Bassinet

When speaking about purchase baby playpen and bassinet, country is the first priority.  Playpen should be sturdy and strong enough to support the baby for sleeping and playing purpose.  All racks and stands of playpen should be well packed by soft endorsement pad, lest your baby will get injured if he accidentally hits himself on those racks and stands.

Take note of the manufacturing materials of the playpen too, make sure the playpen is using non-toxic and lead-free materials.  It is because your baby will inbreathe those toxic elements, these are always the cause of allergy to baby.  For more information about playpen, please visit http://www.babyplaypensbassinets.com

Baby Music Mobile

To get your baby start asleep easily, a calm and peaceful mood is always needed.  Keep a baby musical mobile on the playpen is a good suggestion.  It will give nice and lovely lullaby music to smooth the baby’s emotion, and the tiny toys on the mobile will turn around and around, that sounds funny and relaxed to the baby, and then he will easily start a good sleep.

Bedding Items

To keep a clean and innocuous bedding environment for your baby, you should not forget the all the bedding items as well.  It is recommended to clean all baby bedding quit, pillow, bed sheet, and most of all, those tiny plush toys once a week.  We advocate you to purchase those organic bedding items and sleep pajamas, especially when your baby is at such preliminary age and thus not strong enough to fight against any allergic elements.

A good calibre sleep time is very essential to the baby.  Researches have shown that if parents could support and comfortable and innocuous environment to baby, he will be more likely to have high EQ and greater success in life.

Baby Boomers: First Generation To Take Care Of Parents Longer Than Parents Took Care Of Them

Over 78 million Americans were born between the mid-1940s and mid-1960s, the years that have come to define the demographic anomaly known as the Baby Boom, the most fertile period in U.S. history.  Postwar prosperity had much to do with it, as did establishment in the future and an orientation of reproduction that pushed women out of the wartime workforce and into motherhood.

It was the largest generation ever, bookkeeping for about a third of the U.S.  population by the 1980s.  And Baby Boomers prefabricated their presence felt: 15 million homes built in the 1950s; 50,000 classrooms created in 1952 alone; 1.5 billion cans of baby food sold in 1953.  As empty nesters, Boomers have more money to spend as the median income for Boomers bracket is ,300 annually. The number of couples without kids between the age of 45 and 60 will increase from 8 million in 1980 to 16 millions in the year 2010.   This was the first generation to live with a fear of no tomorrow, with the knowledge that the entire world could be annihilated by The Bomb.  A possibility reinforced each time they had to crouch under their desks at school or in bomb shelters at home.

However, in Canada, the Baby Boom is usually defined as the generation born from 1947 to mid-1960s. Canadian service organisation were repatriated later than the Americans, and Canada’s birth rate did not begin to rise until 1947.

Baby boomers are the largest single age group in Canada, at 7 million (31%), according to Statistics Canada.   Within the next 10 years, 2.6 million of them will be 50 to 60 years old.   In North America, each 7.5 seconds, a Boomer turns 50!

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF Boomers AT WORK

Attitudes

Busy “sandwich” generation taking care of parents & kids Team oriented Idealistic Health and wellness is high priority Human rights activists (they were the ”hippies”) Highly educated and affluent Competitive Success = money, title, recognition Anti rules & regulations

Contributions

Service oriented Comfortable with long-term employment Willing to “go the extra mile” Good at relationships & communication Cool-headed during a crisis

Cautions

Not naturally frugal Coasting into retirement Like high level of process Accustomed to feedback once per year, whether you need it or not Will vigorously protect Power & Turf

SOME MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT Baby Boomers:

Media Myth:   They are on their way out.  Reality:    Average life expectancy for today’s woman is 78.8 years;  for men, 72. Boomers will have longer, healthier work lives than any previous generation.

Media Myth:   They’ll have to grow up.  Reality:   Sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles doubled in the primeval 1990s; majority of buyers were Boomers.

Media Myth:   They’ve always had it easy; they’re assured of a comfortable retirement. Reality:  Of all generations, Boomers have the largest credit card debt. They have an average of 20 years remaining on their mortgages.

Media Myth:  They have quit learning. Reality:  Enrollment by Boomers in adult education programs, everything from tap diversion to elementary economics, is up significantly.

Media Myth:  They’re all workaholics. Reality:  Having worked grueling hours for the past thirty years; now 80% concur their private life is more important than work.

SOME RESULTS OF COLLISIONS BETWEEN Baby Boomers AND OTHER GENERATIONAL GROUPS

when a Senior (mid 1920s to mid-1940s) collides, they think …

Stop speaking about individualized things that should be kept private. Me, me, me. Another divorce ??!!

when a GenX (mid-1060s to late 1970s) collides, they think …

Are you crazy – business meetings after 5:00? Moralistic and hypocritical. Always doing office politics.

when a GenY (1980s to 2000) collides, they think …

Work way too much. Lighten up. Stop hovering!

We are all individuals. There are countless ways we differ in background, personality, values, preferences, and style.  To make judgments about these differences (i.e., who is better), is illogical and meaningless. However, exploring generational diversity can help explain – and bridge – the sometimes-baffling differences behind our unspoken assumptions and at-odds attitudes.

Caution: Be careful to refrain reinforcing negative stereotypes. Generational differences are a start, not an end to understanding.
