Discover the Role of Fish Oil in Fetal Development

Did you know while many nutrients are crucial for fetal development, the brain, eyes and central nervous system need particularly massive amounts of DHA?  DHA or Docosahexaenoic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid that can be produced within the body, if everything is in good working order and a woman gets enough alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.

It is also present in some species of fatty fish.  So, it might be present in a woman’s diet or produced within the body.  But, studies indicate that many women do not get enough of any of the omega-3s.

In a study conducted in Canada, researchers found that the average pregnant women consumed only 1500mg of total omega-3s per day.  DHA and another fatty acid called EPA or Eicosapentaenoic acid accounted for only 117mg.  The rest, 1383mg, was ALA.

2-5% of ALA consumed might be converted into DHA within the body.  So the ALA intake might result in another, 27-69mg of DHA.  Total then, these women might be getting 186mg of DHA or EPA and DHA combined.

Studies indicate that pregnant women should be getting quite a bit more than that.  During fetal development, the baby’s brain and the rest of the central nervous system is accumulating DHA at a rate of 50-70mg per day.  This accumulation continues until about 18 months of age.

So, a minimum of 50-70mg of DHA is needed just to support the brain-building activity.  Studies have shown that blood levels in the fetus are often higher than in the mother’s bloodstream.  In other words, the body is directing the nutrients to the fetus.  As a result, mom’s health might begin to suffer.

No one questions the importance of DHA for fetal development, at least not any more.  But, as yet, no official minimum regular intake has been set by the USDA or other health agencies.  Some physicians are trying to help by making their own recommendations.  They believe that 300-500mg of DHA, alone, per day, is necessary.

Fish oil is the safest and most inexpensive way to get that much DHA.  But, the brands vary, so it is necessary to do a tiny comparative shopping.

Other nutrients essential for normal fetal development include protein, folic acid, calcium, iron and current studies indicate that choline is essential, too.  Even a healthy diet might be absent in some of these essential nutrients.  Inadequate nutritional intake can lead to fatigue, as well as depression.

In conclusion, sufficient omega-3 intake during pregnancy is believed to reduce the risk of premature delivery and lowers the risk of asthma and allergies for the child.  The more that we learn about primeval childhood and fetal development, the more we comprehend the importance of good nutrition.

Month five has arrived and your child has lived for nearly one half of a year! The minor, steady transitions your child is going through are simple to overlook as you are with her day in and day out. First, let her exercise- in fact instruct her how to roll, etc. This will help her muscle development and create extra bonding time between you and her. Second, regularly clean of chew toys by rinsing them in very hot water. Remember, if she is chewing on them constantly they get dirty fast and will need to be cleaned regularly! And if she is teething try using a chilled rubber teething ring to help soothe her pain.

Finally, do not over stimulate your child. Keep playtime short and sweet. An over stimulated child is a cranky child.

Is Fish Oil Critical to Normal Fetal Development?

Normal fetal development depends on many things. But, Mom’s nutritional intake is of utmost importance. Prenatal vitamins are always recommended, particularly those that are rich in folate, vitamin C and other important nutrients. In current years, physicians have begun recommending omega-3 supplements, too.

Omega-3s are long-chained polyunsaturated fatty acids found primarily in fish and fish oils. Pregnant women are cautioned to consume no more than two servings of fish per week, because of the risk of mercury contamination. Mercury intake during pregnancy leads to numerous birth defects and can cause miscarriage.

If they are tested for mercury and other contaminants, fish oil supplements are the ideal substitute to insure sufficient omega-3 intake. Omega-3s, particularly DHA, are essential to normal fetal development, especially to normal brain and eye development.

DHA is found in human breast milk, but not cow’s milk or infant formulas, unless the formulas are fortified with DHA. About 40% of the nerve cells in the brain are composed of DHA. About 60% of the fatty acids in the retina, an area in the back of the eye responsible for central vision, are DHA.

Early studies showed that kids who were breast-fed scored higher on IQ tests, were less likely to have behavioral problems, like ADHD, and had fewer allergies. It took years to for researchers to learn exactly what was missing in the formula-fed infant’s diet that accounted for the difference.

Today, we realize that the difference is DHA. Most infant formulas are now fortified with it, as a result.

Maternal blood levels of DHA drop by about 30% after birth. The drop is believed to be at least partially responsible for post-partum depression. Numerous studies have shown that low DHA levels in the blood are associated with depressive disorders and suicidal behavior. So, not only is DHA important for normal fetal development, it is also important for Mom’s mental health.

Supplementation is suggested for women that are breast-feeding, in order to wage the DHA necessary for healthy brain growth and the development of visual acuity. It also insures that the mom does not suffer from deficiencies.

Flaxseed supplements are promoted by some sources for their omega-3 content. But, like other plant sources, flaxseed does not wage DHA. If the mom is a strict vegan or objects to fish oil supplements for some other reason, marine algae supplements are an alternative. They cost more, but some of them are rich in DHA. That’s what the fishes eat.

Normal fetal development is not the only issue that researchers have looked at concerning omega-3 intake. The average diet is low in omega-3s, but high in omega-6s. Researchers believe that this dietary imbalance might lead to “fatter babies” and increased risk of blubber during childhood.

Omega-6 fatty acids are the primary component of corn oil. Most meats contain more omega-6s than 3s. The only logical way to correct the imbalance, insure normal fetal development, protect Mom’s health and perhaps, reduce the risk of childhood blubber is with fish oil supplementation.
